Saint Patrick’s School (July 2015) won the inaugural Shell-STEM Science Challenge.
This Shell-STEM competition is organised by the Science Centre and by STEM Inc,
and sponsored by SHELL, to promote scientific research and inquiry in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The competition started in January 2015. After the preliminary judging, only 16 teams were selected for the finals out of a total of 49 teams (253 participants) from 31 secondary schools which took part.
A great deal of credit must go to Dr Anthony Yee, an EXCO member of the Patrician Society, and Mr Leong Seh Yong, our STEM educator for patiently guiding our students in their project. Dr Yee, an old boy of the school (class of 1969), holds a doctorate in engineering and is a Professional Engineer as well as a Chartered Engineer. When appointed as a mentor for the competition, he immediately requested to be assigned to his alma mater.
Although St Patrick's has won many competitions, today’s success marks a red-letter day for the school as the last time St Patrick's won an inaugural competition was in 1969 when we became champions of the inaugural inter-school debating competition which was televised nationally.
